The Importance of Spring Cleaning

Things started differently this year..
Over the past couple of years, I have been heavily immersed in work this time of year, which prevented me from getting a clear vision for the new year (as my partner and I start our new year in the spring). This year is different, I quit my very busy job, school is on break, and I finally have time to take in what is around me and what I would like to bring into this new year. My body has started craving things like steamed greens, fresh fish, and fermented foods (literally just took a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar as I type). I was starting to believe I was just a lazy person, never having the energy to clean the home, cook meals, and do the physical labour needed to sort and clear out this property. But things are changing..
Allowing myself a month of Spring to clear out the old and reshape the new is a huge gift to myself, one that I never thought anything of. You see, many other cultures around the year celebrate the Spring Equinox as the start of the New Year... which makes sense as the forest and meadows start to awaken from it's slumber in the underworld and breathe life back into the life around us. Spring is also considered mating or birth season for many animals (bunnies and rabbits have been noted to symbolize fertility during the spring months.. other than just the "Easter Bunny"). The process of life and death--giving up your own bodily autonomy to give life to another being within you.  We all know that in order to bring something new into this world, we must let something go. Yin and yang-- always trying to maintain balance.
This Spring started us off with two eclipses, one being a total solar eclipse which started on April. 8/2024 and made a direct line over parts of Canada and the US. Traditionally Eclipses were feared in ancient cultures as it acts as a portal to other worlds, but also our ancestors. Many cultures till this day will even channel the energy from an Eclipse because the energy is so potent and heightened during these times. Many magikal folks use this portal as a time to let go of what is no longer needed to bring in what will better serve your highest good. In other words.. this is a good time for cleansing--A FULL body and life cleanse. Time to clear out your living space, touching and wiping down everything to bring it new life and energy and removing that which no longer brings you joy. A time to clear out your mind by laying in the spring sun to shine light on those lingering winter blues. A time to forage wild detoxifying medicinal green leaves like dandelion greens, cleavers, nettle, and ect and put them into your spring stews to help clear out the body from a winter of stagnation.. preparing the body for the busy months to come.  Just the act of picking up a broom and sweeping last years energy away can be incredibly healing medicine if you try to tune into it. I am sure many of us understand how hard it is to move forward towards your dreams if you are carrying heavy, un-cleansed energy into your new vision. It is time to face it all (don't be scared), pick up the broom and get into those dark and dusty corners of your living space and your mind. The more you clean, the more clarity you will get. The more toxins you clear out of your body, the more energy you will create.
All of this happening in the season of Taurus, which rules physical belongings, values, nature, body, food, and sensuality. It is important to cleanse out these things in this sign, as Taurus in it's shadow side can be indulgent and stagnant. If you make these changes to your physical surroundings right now, it will set you up for a fun and social Gemini season. A chance to create new networks that align with your own values and peace of mind.
I understand I am grateful to have this time off to explore, cleanse, and manifest what I want to bring into this year, and I understand how hard it is to do when working a full and busy schedule. However, I challenge you to spend your next days off putting on your favourite tunes, putting on some old rags and cleaning gloves, and doing a deep clean of your home space. There is a reason why the term "spring cleaning" has existed for so long.. it's important to remember these passed down traditions.
Till next time,
Syd
