Description

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice root is a staple in my apothecary for a multitude of reasons!

It is known as an “adrenal tonic”, which helps to extend cortisol throughout the day in even amounts rather than in spurts, which over time helps to regulate and bring the adrenals back into balance. It is great in times of burnout, where there is no energy (due to lack of cortisol), and helps gently bring that back. Best paired with an “adrenal restorative” like Rehmannia or Borage to help repair and nourish the adrenal gland.

Lowers androgens. This is the main reason I always go back to it, as I deal with elevated androgen levels which mess with my hormones. Licorice helps to lower androgen levels in the body. For hormonal imbalances (like PCOS) it is best paired with Peony as they work synergistically together to create balance in the endocrine system.

In addition, it is also great at protecting the bodies mucous membranes (creating more moisture barrier). This is good in people who have a dried out internal system. It is also a great mild laxative (for those who are dry internally and therefore struggle with constipation due to dryness). It is also anti-ulcer, because it is so nourishing and moistening/coating to the body it also does this in the GI system — which can also help with things like acid reflux.

She is also known to raise blood pressure, so in those prone to high blood pressure.. it must be used being monitored by a doctor and for very short term use.. or not at all. But for those who struggle with low blood pressure, she is great at rebalancing that, however, be sure to investigate WHY you have low blood pressure in the first place.

She is also a strong anti-inflammatory and anti-viral!
