Foeniculum vulgare (fennel)
LOVE fennel! I had such an aversion to it for awhile, but I have grown to love the digestive effects this plant has. You’ll normally see bowls of it in Indian restaurants, as when you chew on the seeds after a meal it helps you to digest your food and prevent bloating/cramps. This is my main use for fennel as it works so well for that and it brings a lovely sweetness to a tincture or tea formula.
Another major use for it, is it’s a great expectorant (helping to stimulate the cough reflex to cough out stuck mucous). It is an “antispasmodic”, which means it relaxes tension throughout the body– which helps relax the airways and digestive system.
It also has a estrogen modulating affect as it is known as a “phytoestrogen”. It can help lower androgens in high androgen states like “PCOS”. It can also help to promote breast milk in a new mother. This is actually one of the best “galactagogues” (milk producing) plant, but it takes some time to start working at build up in the system.
The oil made from fennel seeds can be used on people who struggle with “hirsutism” (unwanted facial hair) due to high androgens (commonly seen with PCOS).
