Crataegus spp (hawthorn)
One of my favourite plants!!!! This tree/shrub has such a soft spot in my heart. Tied to myths of the fairy lore and used in ancient rituals such as Beltane festival (worn as crowns), it has such a rich history that makes it feel so alive. It is said those who fall asleep underneath a hawthorn tree may get transported to fairyland for long lengths of time.
This is THE plant to work with for heart conditions!! Known as an overall “heart tonic” in herbal medicine, hawthorn has been used traditionally to strengthen the cardiovascular system overall, used to lower blood pressure, support strengthening the veins, promote circulation, used as a coronary and peripheral vasodilator, stabilize collagen, used as a strong antioxidant, help stabilize irregular heartbeats, and the list goes on. Not only that, but it is a great relaxant, helping to feel safe back in your body again.
Energetically, hawthorn can be used for the broken hearted. Great in times of grief and dislocation, helping you to find your inner home within again. It helps to open your heart back up to receiving love, but also providing boundaries for your energetic heart space.
The leaves/flowers are traditionally used to support the function of the heart, while the berries (which I don’t sell YET on here) are used more for supporting the structure of the heart.

Contraindications: None known
Cautions: May act in synergy with cardiac glycosides (e.g. digoxin), beta-blockers, or other hypotensives. Modification of drug dosage may therefore be necessary and thus the patient should be monitored. As digoxin has a narrow dosage range for safety communication with the prescribing physician is vital.
