Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
Mullein leaf has become very popular in the wellness world, but it is a classic folk remedy with a lot of magical uses as well!! Known for it’s moistening, expectorant (triggers cough reflux to produce a productive cough), it is the go to remedy to help support the body in clearing out that dry/sticky cough that won’t go away.
In herbalism, there are dry coughs and wet coughs — dry coughs are when you keep coughing and nothing is coming up.. and when you do cough up any phlegm, it is clumpy and sticky. A wet cough is when you are literally dripping from your nose and you can feel constant fluid in your lungs. Mullein is specific for those with a dry cough.
It is also commonly used in allergies, as there are mild anti-histamine constituents in this plant as well. It has been traditionally used to aid digestive complaints that are of a dry and anxious disorder — like chronic constipation. It is anti-inflammatory and also known as a “lung tonic” that helps to overtime strengthen the pulmonary system as a whole by reducing inflammation and helping to moisten dry and damaged mucous membranes that are protecting the respiratory system.
My favourite way to consume Mullein, is to do a cold extraction. Any herbs that contains “mucilage” (moistening for mucous membranes), in order to extract the most of them, it needs to be extracted with cold water to pull that out. Simply make your tea, pour cold water over it, leave it in the fridge overnight, and strain in the morning! You can still make Mullein as a warm tea, but you won’t get as much of the moistening benefits as you would with a cold extraction.
