Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)
Such a cutie of a plant!!! The leaves and roots are medicinal, in this case I have the roots for sale. Where the leaves are used more for respiratory and urinary conditions, the roots are mainly used for the gut and body inflammation/dryness!
Marshmallow is incredibly moistening and demulcent. This means when mixed with water, it makes a slippery, thick substance that coats your digestive tract. Great if there is any damage done to the GI lining (like chronic inflammation, ulcers, recovering from food allergies, ect). It is incredibly cooling, so in cases of excess heat (acid reflux, ulcers), it helps to combat that and cool things down. It is also very nutritive for the system! It is vulnerary (tissue healing) which can aid to help heal up any damage done in the GI tract. It is a mild laxative (bulking) so helps to bind to bodily waste to produce more full bowel movements. It is anti-inflammatory, great for the elderly or those with arthritis as it helps to coat the mucous membranes throughout the tissues and reduce the inflammation.
Best way to consume is to grind into a fresh powder and do 1tsp 3x a day (away from medications), add in water gradually while stirring to make a rue like consistency and pound back. The other way to consume is to do a cold water extraction with the cut roots. Same amount (1-2tsp per cup) fill up with water and leave in the fridge overnight. This method extracts the thick, mushy/moistening (demulcent) compounds of the plant which is what is going to sooth the gut lining.
