Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Another one of my favourite herbs! This is actually the leaf I use in the logo on “Ellies Herbal Shack”. It is the fist plant I consciously worked with when I first entered the world of herbalism! I was going through a huge transition where I felt very ungrounded and an old friend of mine who actually introduced me to the herbal school told me I needed more “yin”. I had no idea what that meant at the time haha! Essentially when the body is too “yang” (masculinity), it is more outward and flighty, where as bringing more “yin” (femininity) can help to ground and nourish the body. And that it did.

Mugwort is a POWERFUL herb. It is associated with folklore, witchcraft, shamans, fairies, and medieval and nordic lore. In old norse traditions, burning mugwort was used in a similar way that the natives burn white sage. In Chinese medicine, Mugwort is used a lot, especially in “Moxas” which is rolled mugwort that you burn and allow the smoke to be brought to areas around the body that need better circulation and movement. It is associated with other realms, especially the dream world, where it can induce lucid dreaming. I remember the blind tasting we had of this back in the early days of school, and I felt like I could see more intensely (I think I said something silly along the lines of “I feel like I see like a vampire” lol). When we got into the history of the plant, we found out that it was used in historic times to help aid night vision in hunters who went out in the night. Makes sense!!

Because it has the ability to help you move “between realms”, this herb is great for either the person who is too much in the physical reality and struggles to connect spiritually, or, the person who is always in another fairy realm daydreaming who needs to be brought a bit more back into the physical world. It helps balance the bridge between — which then helps you become more present.

The “yin” component that my friend touched on is because it is a female tonic in herbal medicine. Also its associated with the moon goddess “Artemis” who rules the monthly cycles. I found while taking this herb, my cycles eventually started to link up with the full moon. It is a warming bitter (where many other bitter herbs are cooling), this means it works very well to bring circulation to the pelvic region which can help dispel congestion (like cramps and bloating) during menstruation (but also just with your digestion). It is also a potent “emmenagogue” (brings on menstruation when delayed).

A great nerve tonic, it helps to qualm nervousness in the body and reground you to the present moment. Releasing tension that is throughout the body so that you can relax.

A great digestive tonic!! Great for liver health, prepping digestion before big meals, and supporting with bloating/cramps. It also may support intestinal worms!!

Used in my “Sleep + Dream” formula, “Herbal Bitters”, +  “Womb Tonic Tea”.
