Sambucus nigra (Black Elder)
Many folks have heard about elderberry and its use in being made into a syrup for fighting off and preventing colds/flus. However, the flower doesn’t make the wellness news in quite the same fashion. Where you may see cocktails syrups or desert flavouring being made with elderflower, we don’t hear as much about the medicinal benefits!
This is one of my favourite parts of elder to use for the upper respiratory/sinus system. It has an affinity for this area (meaning once you ingest it, you feel it go right into your sinus cavities). It has an astringent quality to it, helping to tighten and tone the mucous membranes and repair any damage to the mucosal lining. Because of this, it helps to dry and pull out any stuck mucous. I love using this in allergy formulas or for someone recovering from a cold that is stuck in the congestion phase. It can also be used for the digestive mucosal lining for this same effect (like if your digestive lining got irritated from years of eating a food you were sensitive too). However, it is much stronger sticking to the upper respiratory area. It is anti-inflammatory so it will help to reduce inflammation in the sinus area as well.
Elderflower is also a great diaphoretic (which helps to promote sweating during the start of a fever to help break the fever). It is a “relaxing diaphoretic”, so it does it in a more gentle way than some of the other herbs like yarrow. Because of this, it is a great childrens herb to use for when they get a fever.
