Motherwort (Leonarus cardiaca)
Hands down one of my favourite plants! Spiritually, motherwort can help heal the mother wound — the wound of not feeling good enough, not feel nourished or supported enough, and unconditional love. It has an affinity for working on the womb region (sacral chakra) and the heart chakra. Connecting womb to heart. The soft leaves are like a cradle for the body and heart. It teaches you how to become your own best mother. It is also great for new mothers who feel under supported. The latin name “Leonarus cardiaca” stands for the lion hearted, due to its leaves resembling that of a lions tale and its medicinal action on the heart. It is ruled under both Leo (Sun) and Venus — connecting the sun and the feminine. It helps you become confident overtime again and to follow your heart (while also protecting your boundaries).
Medicinally, it is a “cardiac tonic” helping to support the cardiovascular system overall by reducing blood pressure, helping stabilize arrhythmia’s of the heart (GREAT in menopause related arrhythmia), and stress levels (anxiety mainly). It is also a potent bitter herb, which can help aid digestion and support liver health– but also induce bleed in someone with irregular menstrual cycles or someone who struggles to get their cycle at all (will need to also address the hormonal component). I find it helps to strengthen the pelvic region overall — moving stagnation in that area. The stagnation it moves (in my opinion) is that of the wound of caring for yourself and your feminine needs. It helps to facilitate the stagnation of fear around that which can help let your body release (in menstruation).
It is commonly used in hyperthyroid formulas as it MAY have an affect at lowering overactive thyroid, but many of my teachers suggest it helps more with the symptoms of overactive thyroid (anxiety and irregular heart rhythms). Again great in menopause for those same actions.
